Termites

Termites eat 24 hours a day, 7 days a week...

The #1 thing you can do to keep termites away from your home, is to have it treated.

If you are thinking about having a home built, it's best to not skip this step with a pre-treat. Pretreating for termites can save you a lot of money and trouble in the future. It's estimated that termites cause $5 billion in property damage each year!

Fun Fact! Did you know homeowners insurance doesn't generally cover termite damage?

Signs you may have a termite infestation:

  • You see swarmers. Swarmers, or alates, are the reproductive portion of a termite colony.  These insects will become the future kings and queens of a new termite colony. A mature colony, roughly two years or older, will produce swarmers.  Depending upon the size of the colony that the swarmers are released from, the number of swarming termites can range from hundreds to even thousands of insects being distributed.  The reason for such high number is survival.  A large portion of the swarmers will not make landfall in an appropriate location for creating a new colony.
  • You find mud tubes. Mud tubes, also called tunnels, are covered structures termites create to move from the ground to the structure.  These tubes indicate that termites are present and need to be exterminated.

What does termite damage look like??

Here are some shelter tubes on a floor joist inside of a crawlspace. For some that might not know the floor joist in an integral part of a home which hold the floor of the home.

Shelter tubes or mud tubes as referred to by some. These are the mini highways that the termites travel inside to and from the food source... Your home!
